IRS Plan to Use Private Collection could Help Scammers


It’s a familiar scam: Someone claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service calls and says you owe back taxes, threatening imminent arrest if you don’t send the money immediately. And for years, the Better Business Bureau and other advocacy groups have been able to offer an important piece of advice: The IRS uses the U.S. Postal Service and does not seek back taxes over the phone. Except that’s no longer the case. Beginning this spring, the IRS will allow private debt collection companies to collect on certain overdue tax debts.
